“Girls in Infrastructure” event. Auckland Airport Wednesday 19th June.

We took a small group of Senior girls to Auckland airport who are interested in a career in construction & engineering industries. The day proved to be an amazing opportunity to hear from, meet and interact with very successful women in a variety of specialist fields from heavy plan operators to construction lawyers and everything in between.  We also made some important contacts who are interested in offering Wesley students positions in the future.

Girls In Infrastructure

“Starting off the day with beautiful smiles and warm welcomes made me excited about the tour. As we entered the host’s building, we were given goodie bags which hyped us up as we were getting free items. Before we were separated into groups for the tour, we were introduced to the workers including the Chief Safety Officer for the airport and the project manager for the new developments at the airport. They explained what we were going to explore during the tour. It was a great experience as we hopped onto some rides for the first time. Huge trucks, rollers, concrete mixers, and diggers and cranes.  Workers from particular companies were very friendly and clear when talking about their company and what they do. In addition, we were also given free lunches and water to keep us hydrated during the tour. As we went to witness the developing airport, we also met a former student of Wesley College who was the site manager. He was called David Tiko who left in 2011 – he was delighted to meet us and we were to meet him. Moreover, at the construction site, I was pleased to see a lot of females working on projects and constructions. It was a really lovely experience as I got to see that there are more female working opportunities out there.”

Queenstown Resort College. Presentation in Chapel on Thursday 20th June

Karen Wright from the Paihia campus of the college in the Bay of Islands visited and presented very a informative and enticing talk about the courses they offer students.  These range from level 4 to 6 and can be extending to a full Business Administration degree.  Karen described the living and study arrangements at the college and how they really look after students and help them settle in, many may be away from home for the first time. Other benefits of the courses are a direct link to Air New Zealand and a 9-month work placement in a world leading hotel or resort anywhere in the world. Lots of students sounded excited about this opportunity.
